Improve Your Chess Skills with Free Lessons from Chess.com

Are there any free alternatives to Chess.com's lessons? I find them very helpful as it's interactive, explains the entire thought process and strategy, and explains why wrong moves are wrong, etc. I don't have a subscription so I'm limited to 1 a day. I know paying is an option but I plan to support lichess in the near future. Coming from the open source industry, I really admire that project.

Chess.com has a unique feature of lessons. The lessons have videos which explain the topic and challenges which are like puzzles regarding the topic explained in the videos. Contributors can create lessons but some are created by the core chess.com team.

Chess24 follows a freemium model with limited access to all features for free accounts and unlimited for premium members. Among the advantages of going premium is challenging world-class players during a banter blitz session and getting live lessons with top coaches.

Lichess is the 2nd largest online chess platform besides chess.com with over 10 million plus downloads on the google play store. You can play matches with other players around the world, play in tournaments, watch your favorite streamers, engage in the community, analyse your games, and more importantly solve thousands of chess tactics to help develop your visualization and calculation skills.

This site and the app is hosted by chess.com, but offers so much more! Known as Chess for Kids- Play & Learn in the App Store, users can create a free account on a web browser, or on both Apple and Android devices. Chesskid.com offers a whole host of information, lessons, puzzles, and live games to help kids aged 4 and up learn to play and perfect their skills!

Chess.com has a lot to boast about considering that it hosts millions of live games each day online through a web browser or its apps, available for both Android and iOS users! In fact, chess.com owns chesskid.com, so the interface and available lessons are very similar, but geared towards older players. While chess.com is not a chess app for kids specifically, it can give children an extra challenge by playing more formidable opponents online, while parents supervise.

The app is free to try, but after a few lessons, you will be asked to upgrade to a $3/month membership. At the time of writing this guide, there were about 200 lessons. The developers claim to design and add new lessons regularly.

Lichess is a free and open-source Internet chess server run by a non-profit organization. It was founded in 2010 by French programmer Thibault Duplessis (more info on Wikipedia). Lichess has the second most traffic for chess websites after chess.com. It has never charged a penny to its users and the site continues on the free (and ad-free!) way. All their efforts are funded by donors who enjoy the platform and want to help keep it alive.
