cracks can often be related to recent decay/damage that needs a repair, usually that involves a crown. not all decays are the same. if a cusp would fracture, the tooth would not benefit from a crown, if it would easily fracture with normal bite pressure. if the crack is in the outer body of the tooth, and does not have a definite cusp or a definite pulpal floor, then it does not necessarily need a crown. cuspal fractures can usually be avoided by keeping the tooth hydrated, but still that possibility has to be ruled out.

there is also a condition called the washout syndrome that can destroy your teeth (usually first molars). this is due to stress fracture around the deciduous tooth with no pulpal or periodontal involvement. the term washout refers to the fact that in the absence of a tooth, there is a hole through the adult tooth. for example, if a tooth wears down, there is an area of dentine that is completely missing. in the young adult, often a washout can be seen and in the elderly, it also can be seen and one can also see the condition of the bone loss around the dentine.
the first stage is to remove the decayed area with a surgical tool. after it is removed, it will look like a hole if you look at the dentine from the mouth. depending on your particular case, this may not be all of the decayed area.
this plays a big role for me as this may be the underlying cause of the crack. if their bite is not or has not been idealized to lessen the potential for further destruction, then i would highly consider doing this if the patient is agreeable. along this line, a big thing to consider is if the tooth in question is the patient's first point of contact in centric relation. not only does this give a big clue as to why you are seeing the crack, you could be in for big trouble if you just go do a crown on the tooth. for more on that, check out this previous digest article on tooth preparation.
