How to use Siemens Tia Portal V11

In this section, we will show you how to use Siemens Tia Portal V11 to create, configure, program, test, and diagnose PLC projects with TIA Portal V11. We will use a simple example of a PLC project that controls a traffic light system with three lights: red, yellow, and green. The project requirements are as follows:

  • The traffic light system should cycle through three states: red, yellow, and green.

  • The red light should be on for 10 seconds, then switch to yellow.

  • The yellow light should be on for 5 seconds, then switch to green.

  • The green light should be on for 15 seconds, then switch to red.

  • The cycle should repeat indefinitely until the PLC is stopped or reset.

How to create, configure, program, test, and diagnose PLC projects with TIA Portal V11?

To create, configure, program, test, and diagnose PLC projects with TIA Portal V11, follow these steps:

  • Launch TIA Portal V11 from your desktop or start menu. You will see a start screen with some options for creating or opening PLC projects.

  • Click on "Create new project" on the start screen. You will see a screen that asks you to enter some information about your new project, such as the project name, the project path, the project description, etc.

  • Enter "Traffic Light System" as the project name and choose a suitable project path and description. Then click on "Create" to create your new project.

  • You will see a screen that shows you the main interface of TIA Portal V11. On the left side of the screen, you will see a project tree that contains all the components and elements of your project. On the right side of the screen, you will see a work area where you can edit and view your project components and elements.

  • The first step is to add a PLC device to your project. To do this, right-click on "Devices & networks" in the project tree and select "Add new device". You will see a screen that shows you a list of available PLC devices that are supported by T IA Portal framework. You can choose the PLC device that matches your project requirements and preferences. For this example, we will choose a SIMATIC S7-1200 PLC device.

  • Click on "Add" to add the PLC device to your project. You will see a screen that shows you the details of the PLC device, such as the order number, the firmware version, the device name, etc.

  • Click on "OK" to confirm the PLC device settings. You will see that the PLC device has been added to your project tree under "Devices & networks".

  • The next step is to configure the PLC device settings and parameters. To do this, double-click on the PLC device in the project tree. You will see a screen that shows you the configuration options for the PLC device.

  • On this screen, you can change various settings and parameters of the PLC device, such as the IP address, the subnet mask, the gateway, the communication protocols, the hardware modules, the memory allocation, etc.

  • For this example, we will keep the default settings and parameters of the PLC device. However, you can change them according to your project needs and preferences.

  • Click on "Save and compile" to save and compile your PLC device configuration. You will see a screen that shows you the status of the compilation process. If there are no errors or warnings, you will see a green check mark next to your PLC device in the project tree.

  • The next step is to program the PLC logic for your project. To do this, right-click on "Program blocks" under your PLC device in the project tree and select "Add new block". You will see a screen that shows you a list of available block types for your PLC programming.

  • You can choose from different block types, such as OBs (Organization Blocks), FCs (Functions), FBs (Function Blocks), DBs (Data Blocks), etc. For this example, we will choose an OB as our main block for our PLC logic.

  • Click on "Add" to add an OB to your project. You will see a screen that asks you to enter some information about your OB, such as the block name, the block number, the block description, etc.

  • Enter "OB1" as the block name and number and "Main block for traffic light system" as the block description. Then click on "OK" to create your OB.

  • You will see that an OB1 has been added to your project tree under "Program blocks". Double-click on it to open it in the work area. You will see a screen that shows you the editor for your OB1.

  • On this screen, you can write your PLC logic using different programming languages, such as Ladder Diagram (LD), Function Block Diagram (FBD), Structured Text (ST), Sequential Function Chart (SFC), Statement List (STL), Continuous Function Chart (CFC), Graphical Configuration Language (GCL), etc.

  • For this example, we will use Ladder Diagram (LD) as our programming language. LD is a graphical language that uses symbols and connections to represent logic operations and data flows. It is similar to electrical wiring diagrams and it is easy to understand and use.

  • To write your LD code for your OB1, you can use various tools and functions from TIA Portal V11, such as editors, libraries, compilers, debuggers, simulators, diagnostics, trace functions, online/offline comparison, cross-references, etc.

  • For this example, we will use some basic tools and functions from TIA Portal V11 to write our LD code for our OB1. We will use a timer (T1) to control the duration of each light state, three outputs (Q0.0 for red light, Q0.1 for yellow light and Q0.2 for green light), and three inputs (I0.0 for start button, I0.1 for stop button, and I0.2 for reset button).

  • To add a timer to your LD code, click on the "Timer" icon on the toolbar and drag it to the work area. You will see a dialog box that asks you to enter some information about your timer, such as the timer name, the timer type, the preset value, the current value, etc.

  • Enter "T1" as the timer name and choose "TON" as the timer type. TON stands for Timer On Delay, which means that the timer starts counting when the input is ON and stops counting when the input is OFF. Enter "10" as the preset value and "0" as the current value. The preset value is the time in seconds that the timer needs to count before it turns ON its output. The current value is the time in seconds that the timer has counted so far.

  • Click on "OK" to add the timer to your LD code. You will see a symbol that represents your timer on the work area.

  • To add an output to your LD code, click on the "Output" icon on the toolbar and drag it to the work area. You will see a dialog box that asks you to enter some information about your output, such as the output name, the output address, etc.

  • Enter "Red Light" as the output name and "Q0.0" as the output address. The output address is the physical or logical location of your output device on your PLC device.

  • Click on "OK" to add the output to your LD code. You will see a symbol that represents your output on the work area.

  • To connect your timer and your output with a wire, click on the "Wire" icon on the toolbar and drag it from one symbol to another. You will see a line that represents a wire on the work area.

To add an input to your LD code, click on the "Input" icon on the toolbar and drag it to the work area. You will see a dialog box that asks you to enter
